Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout the process of creating my media product i gained the ability to use many different technologies. Before doing this actual product i had never touched Photoshop before so it was like a brand new experience. At first i wasnt confident at all with using Photoshop, however eventually i managed to be a lot more confident and i succesfully completed my main product with full confidence that i did a pretty good job. I also got a chance to use the Apple Macs, learning to control an Apple Mac computer was difficult at first because it was so different from using a normal computer and i have only really had a slight experience in using them in the past, this slowed me down at the beginning of the process, but after a couple of weeks of using the technology it gave me many advantages,  mostly because of the easy use of taking printscreens and the way it displays Photoshop.

Photoshop was the main technology I worked with over the creation process of my media product. This program was hard to use and get used to at the start and was very stressful throughout the whole process but without it the creation of my media product wouldn't have been possible. All the possibilities that Photoshop opened up to the creation of my magazine such as: the ability to edit my photos, add text and vital information and create my whole magazine! Overall the Photoshop tool came in extremely useful in the construction of my media product and was the most handy tool we were provided with.

FinePix HS10 HS11 zoomed.jpgWe got to work with many other tools whilst constructing our product; cameras, Prezi, Animoto, Slideshare and other physical forms of technology such as video cameras, these are things thta i never knew existed before i started doing this course. The use of cameras (FinePix HS10 HS11) was huge in the production of my media product. The digital images i captured using the cameras we were provided with were the backbone of my magazine and helped me create a very proffesional approach.

Overall, throughout the construction of my media product i have gained the ability to use many different technologies which are helpful in the media industry, all of which came in unbelievably handy in the production of my magazine and will help with other things over time also.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my magazine Image are 18-30 year olds. I am attempting to cater for a gap in the market, where people want to hear about music especially my genre of music as it has managed to find its way into mainstream music and has made it onto the charts in recent years making it a valuble genre that hasnt been touched yet. Which is why on the Front Cover and Contents Page I have included sell lines that could be potentially prove to be very popular with these readers, smart short and effective sell lines and main sell line all lead to attracting interest as the main attraction is the imagery itself, if you look at my cover that is a prime example of this.

Furthermore with my demographic, fashion is a key factor in a lot of their lifestyles, so the design of the magazine is essential in fitting with the audience as many of these people are electronic music fans. I have attempted to dress my artists in this way as sort of the everyday man that is quite fashionable as most electronic artists are everyday people who create the music as a hobby making my model very relatable to everyday people who may read the magazine. I created my work with a very set standard as if the magazine doesn't look good then the audience won't buy it, as looking good is just as important as a high quality magazine.

Though not stated on the magazine itself, my magazine is also available on a digital format since, my target audience are a little younger they would be more in touch with the newest technologies.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Ideally I would like Bauer Media group to publish magazine, a lot of electronic DJ's are all european and seeing as Bauer Media is based in Germany it would appeal more to european fans who love the genre and magazine just as much as us in the UK.  I have Researched Bauer Media and it is an institution that has a broad range of magazines including Q and Kerrang which were very good at inspiring me while creating the magazine they only publish two very disctinctive genre magazines, which is great because all publishing houses that music magazines (except with women magazines) are the biggest sellers and if I was to introduce my magazine to Bauer Media there is a decent probabilty they might accept it because music magazines are a huge seller and  they only have 2 magazines thatr they publish in the category of music that both have their own distincitve gnere and they dont cover my genre.

I also thought that if my magazine were to be published nationally, the better option would be a publishing house that is UK based, since they would have more information about here, rather than a publishing house that are not UK based for example IPC Media.

Time Management- 24/3/13

I am in the process of creating my actual work now and i have succesfully used photoshop to create a mask for my work that will be used on all three of my main products which if you asked me at the start of the year to do i wouldnt have a clue as to what to do.

I am currently editing togethr my work and it is going pretty well hopefully the images taken with a very highlighted shade will put accross the theme i am trying to convey.

Photographs which ones used, which ones I haven't

Double Page Spread Images- there was 3 images considered in the process of my DPS all where a very professional looking which is something that i wanted for my actual DPS as it gives you something different than the cover and the contents. The first image i actually liked but seeing as this is the DPS and i have already featured my model in a different style that has him looking away in my contents page making this shot not very good.
The next image i feel like he is looking far too arrogant for the theme that i want to convey, his pose is also very out of sync with what i want to do. His character is supposed to be mysterious and likes to keep to themselves not cocky.
This image was used in my final DPS as i felt like it was a very good image as it has everything i want for the page and more. I also really like his posture in this image as it really makes him look quite innocent.

Cover- These are the images considered for my cover. The first image you see is quite good, however i wanted my cover to be impactful and him not looking directly at the audience is what made me not like this photo.

This image is a lot  better than the previous image, the only problem with this image was the fact that it his head is a little slanted and i want something more central and something a lot more basic.

This image was the one used for the actual cover, i really liked his facial expression and the way he is just standing normally it gives the appearance that he is just an ordinary guy making him very relatable from the audiences perspective.

Contents- These are the images that were all in contention in being my image on my contents page. The first picture i actually really like as he is standing pretty straight and it gives the impression that he serious, unfortunately i wanted the contents page image to be a lot more animated as it will differ from the cover.

This final image is my favourite by far which is why it was my actual contents page image. it shows him in a very determined state that i really like.

Fonts with commentary

For my magazine i am going to use 3 different fonts that will help me stay with the overall theme of my work and make it a lot more in sync with all of the pages as they will all correlate with a similar font.

For my masthead and things like that i will be using the Slant font which is from the website dafont, it is a very cool and very suggestive for my genre.

I wanted something very generic ad pretty standard that would highlight key words from the cover which is why i will be using the Arial font as it will allow me to use the ordinary Arial font for important information and things like that but also it would let me use the Arial Black version to make it bolder in places if need be.

The final font that i will be using is Thyssen J which is also another dafont font, it is very stylish and gives my work an identity as well as reflects back to my overall  genre of electronic music.

So in conclusion I will be using the Arial font as it is edgy yet readable for most of my work including the text in the DPS as it is nice and chunky and very easy to read. I will also be using two other fonts from the dafont website to help me portray my theme.

Creating My Bands Logo

Wednesday, 20 March 2013

Time Management- 20/3/2013

I have now taken all of my photographs needed for my work and am now in the process of creating my actual work which im actually excited for. I should hopefully have it completed pretty soon as i have created a couple of flat plans involving what i want o d and what my work will look like. I have also now created a draft of the article featured in the double page spread which saves me time later especially considering m trying to meet the deadlines for the work. I am a little bit more confident with Photoshop so my work should be pretty good.

Draft of Double Page Spread

Double Page Spread Draft
This is basically the draft for my double page spread i have seen this type of article before in other magazines such as NME,  it is basically just an introduction to the artist for the audience who maybe haven't heard of them before which features quotes by the artist but is packed full of information about them to give you a better insight.
Skeleton Boy is a new wave noise maker who keeps a certain level of mystery about himself all at the same time attracting a very big and positive fan base. Can the king of underground electronic music really be that good?
Skeleton Boy is new on the scene of electronic music, his catchy beats and soothing lyrics have been shuffling around many ravers iPod and has been played over 6 million times on YouTube and is still going strong. But how can someone with no record label and no from of advertising gain this kind of recognition.
"I like to think that my music represents something bigger than just your normal kind of electronic music, my music really speaks from the heart." This was the first thing we heard the Sunderland born DJ as he likes to keep to himself and not take part in any form of interview or promote his music like many others in the genre have. Not to mention the fact that he carry's his logo everywhere there's not one picture of him  that doesn't feature half of this mans face covered in some sort of white skeleton like outline that has had everyone wondering why. "The reason behind the lines is that i felt like just an ordinary guy, in my field you need to have something different that makes you stand out, Daft Punk has the various astronaut like Helmets, SBTRKT has his various tribal masks, the least i can do is show how they inspire me and continue the trend."
The song 'Fires Friendly' is now being called this decades next big summer anthem with all of the big electronic pioneers all endorsing this as being the culmination of the next big thing to hit electronic music since Daft Punk's Around the World. There is  no stopping this man from reaching the very top of electronic music and who is really going to stop dancing to complain about it.

Masthead Designs

For my masthead I want something traditional but something that also represents what the magazine is about, i had to go onto the dafont website which has a lot of various different fonts available for all kinds of different purposes. This where i managed to find a couple of different fonts that i thought would go well for my magazine. The title i finally decided on was TE which stands for Total Electronic which helps define the genre of the magazine a lot more.

This is the first font that i looked at and i at first really liked it but it is quite hard to understand the actual letters themselves so it ruined y opinion of it and i chose to loo for something else.

For this font i wanted to try something different but it just ended up looking like something you might see on an energy drink so i didn't really consider this font it was just something to experiment with.
For awhile this font was my final font as i really liked how space age it looked but i would eventually find another font that was a better as i felt this font was good it was just lacking something unique.

I eventually came across the Slant font which isn't too crazy and is actually pretty professional but with a nice edge too it just enough to convey he theme of my magazine which is ofcourse electronic music. This font also reminds me of the font used by a lot of artists that i like so that is an added bonus for the font itself.

Email Organisation

This is me sending an email to my friend to see if he is available for when we are to take photos for my magazine.

Front Cover, Contents and DPS Flat Plans Rationale

Layout and Font
I have gone for a typical magazine layout where the masthead is in the top left hand corner and the main sell line is found in the middle of the page with a sub heading just below it this is just to convey the fact that this is a pretty generic layout similar to other magazines. My magazine cover will also feature selling points running down the side of the page then finally the barcode and essential information which is located at the bottom right hand side of the page. The font however will be the same for everything on the cover and the magazine as it makes my magazine stand out, the only font that will be different will be the main sell line and the masthead everything else will be the same to create a level of  continuity.

Text Usage
I will use a mixture of quotes and first person language to try and grab the attention of the audience so they feel like i am like one of them with the use of rhetorical questions that maybe them themselves are thinking or wondering.

Image Usage
There will be one image portrayed on the cover and that is my main image which will be the main focus of the cover becuase of its 3D style and choice of image also the editing that will go into designing and creating it. The model will wear just vey generic street clothing as that is what the generic electronic DJ would wear as they are just like everyday people which would also make people more inclined to buy it as they can come from a similar perspective as my artist.

Colour Usage
The colour scheme for my cover will be mostly blacks greys white and red the colour scheme will reflect the actual genre as it will be really gritty sort of like how the music is itself, there will also be a 3D element to it that will make it very distinctive and will reflect the genre of my magazine that being electronic music.  I want the reader to take notice when they look at my cover which is why I wont be doing the normal bog standard colour scheme.

Layout and Font
The layout of my contents page will be pretty generic as it will only just be a way to display which page has what on i will be going for a Q like layout with the use of quite big images and small amounts of text to give the reader the idea that i want them to go straight towards the actual content in the issue

Image Usage
There will be a variety of different images all having something to do with other articles featured in the magazine each image will be unique and different.

Colour Usage
The colour schceme will be mostly dull colours like blacks and whites and greys and maybe uses of red, I want the contents page to have  a different type of style than the cover, i want the contents page to be very neutral in terms of colour.

Text Usage
For my list of contents I will be pulling out article quotes and then just maybe trying to place statements that could be considered funny to the reader, all of which will be in the same font.

Layout and Font
My double page spread will follow the codes and conventions of a normal double page spread the layout will consist of text on the left side of the page then an image on the right side, the only thing that I will be doing different is that I will have a different style font that is reflective to my artist bigger than the font just above it that will make it look a lot more in touch with the theme of the article. The main image will be featured on one side of the page which can be seen in many different types of magazines.

Image Usage
I will only have one image on my dps which will be used on the right hand side of the page. I want to have something different with this image some sort of editing technique that makes it stand out and also reflect the style of music.

Colour Usage
The colour scheme for my double page spread will be a mix of bright and dull colours so its the best of both worlds from the cover and the contents page.

Text Usage
The text that I will include in my double page spread will feature infomative discriptions and an interview with the person that will be featured in my magazine, I will try to have a joking side as well when writing this text.

The conventions, the producer and target audience

The conventions, the producer and target audience of my text:

The conventions I will follow will be similar to that of most magazines where the masthead will be in the top left hand corner, my main image will also be placed in the middle of the page and will not feature any more images on the page only the main image. The font will be a basic design for the text on the page and also the text used in the masthead. I will appeal to my target audience with the choice of font and the colour scheme. I may change some of these when it comes to creating my final design but I will be sure to create more than one with different styles to see which one is best. As for my contents page I will have my magazines logo at the top of the page and the list of contents will be placed below that, there will be images also featured on the contents page they will relate to other similar artists that are featured in the magazine. The font for the contents page will be the same as that of the front cover as I want a level of continuity and a professional approach when it comes to the text. The colour scheme for the contents page will be the same as the cover with reds blacks greys and whites being the main focus. My double page spread will be the same in terms of the text, one side of the double page spread will feature just an images with a small piece of text talking about the image itself, the text will be a joke about the pose that my model is doing which is used in magazines such as NME. All of this is just a rough idea on what I want to do things are subject to change if i feel like something would be better in a different text or a bigger or smaller size. I think that my choice of images and text will cater towards the age group that i want to make the magazine for as well as the genre of electronic music.

If I was to choose which company would produce and distribute my magazine 'In the real world' I would choose Bauer Media as they produce and distribute magazines such as Q and seeing as my main focus is to try and produce a magazine that has similar codes and conventions  to Q Bauer Media would be my best option. Bauer Media's magazines that they distribute are usually aimed at a certain age or social group for example Q may be catered towards 18-35 year olds because of its type of content and the way its images are produced, then on the other hand you have Kerrang which is a a magazine catered to 16-26 year olds as its content is mostly just factual and its images are in your face. My magazine will be catered towards 18-30 year olds as it speaks directly to those who enjoy a specific genre of music that being electronic, the articles will be informative yet not so much where it takes itself very seriously. The survey that I posted on Reddit is a bonus as most of the people who participated in my survey are 18-30 years old so most of the feedback I received can help me cater towards these people a lot better. Another reason why Bauer Media is a good choice for my magazine is that they are based all over the world so my magazine could be seen by millions of people on a daily basis maybe could even become a recognisable brand not to mention Bauer Media has been a company since 1875 which shows that they have a rich heritage and they know what will work and what won't, so they could give me advice on what could be changed or tweaked to make it better.

The target audience for my text will be pretty much everyone who maybe likes the genre of music or likes to go out to night clubs as they play a similar style of music that this magazine is catered too. The magazine will also follow current pop culture with latest trends of the latest music the text will be straight to the point in places but also have a joking side to it in necessary places, I know this because my audience feedback on my survey suggested that most of them read Q which tends to have a joking side to it as well.

I would really want to be broadcasting my magazine to the age group that I want to cater for so I would broadcast my magazine in places like record stores such as HMV as HMV is the best place where people go to buy music and is probably the biggest platform I could use to get more people interested in my magazine. Another good place for me seeing as pretty much everyone likes electronic music would be various super markets as that will attract a bigger interest. Common rooms of universities and colleges would also be a good place as most of the students there will be considered apart of my target audience. All of these outlets have something to do with the people I want to cater to for my magazine in some way.

The Recce

the ‘recce’

Provide answers in paragraph form to the questions below that

are relevant to your production.

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )?
– Objects in the way might be a potential hazard when taking some of the photos
2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?
– Keep the area where I am taking the photos clear of obstacles or anything that could be in the way that could prove to be a hazard
3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
– The photos will be taken indoors so the weather and time of day will not matter.
4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?
– My background will be a plain white background, with lighting just say in the image so I will be sure to take care in where I place the object I will use to project my lighting.
5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?
– I will be using a flash and taking images without the flash to see which looks better when taking the images indoors.
6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?
– Yes, the places I will be taking the images is my house and my friends house
7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio at Shiney)?
– No
8.    Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?
– No as the images will just feature one person or a group of people in one area indoors.
9.    Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?
– I have organised the date of the photo-shoot so that everyone involved will be available, I also have people that would be willing to help as a plan b
10. Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…?
– yes and everything is accounted for

Photoshoot Planning

Photo shoot Planning

What emotional impact do you want your photography do have upon the reader? How?

I want the images to be strong and have emotion, but at the same time have a level of mystery that will make the audience want to read more.

What personnel do you need? Who are you going to photograph?
My friend and fellow classmate Mark will be involved in the photos, maybe some of my other friends in other images featured in my contents page.

What props will you need?
No Props Required

How are you going to emphasise colour?

I am going to try for a 3D effect for my images to re iterate the fact that this is an electronic and house based magazine so the distorted 3D effect will emphasize the actual music itself rather than me just saying it.

Have you briefed your personnel/models?

I have briefed my friends on what is going to happen especially Mark as he will be playing a musician who doesn't normally take part in interviews so hopefully that will show when the images are taken.

What lighting will you need? Any other equipment?

There will be certain lights to highlight one half of Marks face. The photos will be taken at Shiney Row and i want them to be quite professional.

Where will you shoot? Will you need a backdrop?

I will be shooting at Shiney Row campus as their studio facilities are perfect for the style of photographs i want to take.
Make-up? Costume?

I have asked Mark to wear something casual as it goes with Marks character.
