Key Features of a Magazine Cover

Masthead- Usually the name of the certain magazine, it is most likely always in bold text and can be found usually on the top left side of the news paper as we read left to right, sometime the masthead is found under the main image which draws your attention to that but you recognise the logo, thats what makes each different magazine cover stand out and make you buy it.
Sub Head- Sub heads are text below the main sell line, explaining or commenting on what the main sell line might mean bringing the reader in to want to buy it. Usually in different font and colour so the reader is drawn to it.
Main Sell Lines- The main sell line is usually the biggest text on the cover. It can range to literally anything it could just be the bands name or a qoute from a interview in the magazine, it is the main sell line and the main image that the reader is drawn to first when they look at a magazine. It can be found anywhere on a magazine usually in the middle so you are drawn to it.
Sell lines- Sell lines are just the same as the main sell lines, but smaller so you arent drawn to them at first but usually just mention other articles or stories that are in the magazine. They are usually found on the edges of the magazine.
Barcode- The main purpose of the barcode is just so they can scan it on tills but can be found anywhere on a magazine even on the back sometimes.
Essesntial Info- The essential info is just the price of the magazine, the date of its release and what issue it is. It is the smallest part of the magazine cover because they want you to buy the magazine on the content in the magazine not becuase of the price. It can be located anywhere on a magazine.
Main Image- The main image is the most important thing on a magazine cover, it is what makes the reader want to buy and read the magazine. It is most likely a image of something related to the main article that is featured in the magazine. The images can be found all over the front cover of a magazine, some magazines have more than one photo on the cover which could either be showing examples of what posters are inside or images of sell lines that are in the magazine. Some images can cause controversy over what is featured on the cover, but it also makes the viewer interested in the magazine.

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine
